Gots to have that mayhem…

Published by Mugwug at 19:50:54 under General

As a reward for over a month with no smoking (not even any cheating, promise), and because I’ve been meaning to treat myself for some time now, I broke down on Tuesday and purchased myself a new PS3 and a copy of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.

All I can say for the moment is;

“WOW”.

Going to have to dedicate some more time to this game. Definately!

(A tip of the hat to Piet for providing the final nudge)

    AC-130’s are fun…

If you guys want to kill each other I’ll pick it up for my PS3 and we can hook up online.

Even though Doc Simon had been yelling at me for a while about how I need to pick this up I had been dragging my feet. I just got to play it for the first time last weekend at a friend’s apt and I have to say it rocks hardcore. The multiplayer was fun but seemed like the same old stuff but the Single player missions were amazing.

At one point I was trying to take out a room full of insurgents that kept taking pot shots out of a window then hiding behind cover and I couldn’t seem to get them with the M4 so I took a page out of a buddy of mine’s “fallujah stories” and picked up a fallen insurgent’s AK and just shot the guys through the wall. I thought that was the coolest damn thing cause I pretty much got rewarded for thinking and not just “twitch response”.

My favorite line so far was at the beginning with the SAS mission on the freighter…

“No one makes it the first time…”

    Had me laughing out loud.

Mike:The AC130 I’ve already gone back and played before even finishing the game, hell grab a copy, but give me a few days to get a network cable over to my livingroom as I haven’t had a chance to go online with the system yet.

    Piet, you in for that?

    Grif: Undoubtedly!

The first thing that was recommended to my by my brother was grabbing a different rifle if penetration became an issue. To my surprise (and satisfaction) it became second nature to drop my pistol and grab an AK early on into each mission.

    Just intense, absolutely intense.

Anyone have any other recommendations for PS3 games that MUST be played.

Ooooh baby! That game is amazing. They put so much thought into that game it’s crazy. Can’t wait until I get a 360.

Have you played “Ground War” on the multiplayer portion? It’s total chaos the first couple times you play.

  5. Pieteron 21 Feb 2008 at 23:11:39

    “Piet, you in for that?”…
If we can work out the logistics, Hell ya.
My network drops for no good reason.
Give me a day or two to see if I can square away the router.

“Anyone have any other recommendations for PS3 games that MUST be played.”..
Not that it’s out yet, but “Fallout 3″.
Or how about “Resistance: Fall of man.

  6. Mugwugon 22 Feb 2008 at 07:07:45

Ah hell Piet, I’m gonna need a few days to fish some cat5 from the desk under the floor and over to the TV in the living room. I’ll expect it’ll be Saturday before I’m even connecting to the net (provided I can collect the supplies while I’m at work today).

FALLOUT 3! Wow… in all the fun that had simply slipped my mind, and it was one of the selling points behind the whole PS3 thing.

It’s due out the fourth quarter of 2008? Ah man, that hardly seems fair.

Piet, how much play time have you put into “Resistance: Fall of man”?
I ask because I can’t find a copy to rent, and I think I can squeeze just one more title into the game budget for the next little while.

Going to have to drop by EB and check the other titles.

Hmmm … According to the ESA, the average age of game buyers is now 38 - which surprised me at first.

But, then, it’s your generation that started out playing Infocomm/Zork Hitchhiker’s Guide … in text mode!

    I suppose playing … http://www.douglasadams.com/creations/infocomjava.html
just doesn’t cut it any more :-(

AS long as you’re having fun! LOL!!

  8. Mikeon 22 Feb 2008 at 09:38:49

My problem with the PS3 is “Resistance” is about all that’s out now. I think a verison of Rainbow Six: Vegas came out for it, too. If it did I highly recommend it, as a year and more after its release and it’s still my favourite console game.

Army of Two, Frontlines, Rainbow Six Vegas 2, and a few more are all on their way to the 360 in the next couple months, though.

  9. Pieteron 22 Feb 2008 at 11:22:57

Erik: CAT5, no wireless? It’s probibly cheper to buy a “G” router than good CAT5 cable now a days.

Mike: Titles like COD, Fall of man are few and far between right now.
There are some others out there, and a lot more coming.

Army of two, due March 4th.
    Metal Gear solid 4, due Q4 2008.
    Assassins Creed, out now.
Resident evil 5, no date yet.
    Battlefield: Bad company, Q2 2008
    SOCOM: Confrontation, TBA 2008
    Rainbow Six: Vegas, Out now.
    Silent Hill 5, TBA
    Mercenaries 2: TBA.
    F.E.A.R. out now.
There’s more, but these are what’s on my radar.

P.S. I was up late last night getting beat down by some pre-teens on “free for all”. The on-line of COD is not bad at all.

Just remember like everything else on-line, you’re going to have to sit through the updates. But at least it’s free.

  10. Mikeon 22 Feb 2008 at 12:04:57

Assassin’s Creed is incredible, I’d like to point out.

And I’m going to state again 1000’s of hours have been put away with my group on Vegas hunting terrorists.

I’m glad there’s even more titles coming out on both platforms. I haven’t been keeping track because PS3 games tend to be a little more sketchy than their X-Box equivalents. Designers seems to be better able to handle the 360. Too bad it’s basically a timebomb.

  11. Mugwugon 22 Feb 2008 at 12:43:19

Ok, then. I think Resistance is the way to go for game number two.

Ah Piet, cat5 is no big deal, I have a wireless router but before I figured that the cheapest option was to just plug the PS3 into the router and be done with it.

Part of my “wiring rationalization” of the house was running cat5 hither and thither, so it’s really no big deal. I just have to figure out where the wireless router is going to end up as there doesn’t seem to be any need to have it on the computer desk if there are network connections everywhere, ya know?

I know I know. It’s low-tec, and unsexy but I really don’t like wireless in general, and when I can avoid it (and save money in the process) I prefer to.

Thats a good list of new games Piet, I’ll admit I’ve spent a few hours trolling through Sonys website and carefully looking over the offerings both present and on the way.

I’ll admit however, beside COD4 and Fallout the only other title I am actually anxiously waiting for is Mercenaries 2: World in Flames. If anything like the original I could waste months playing that thing.

    Doh…

The freakin ps3 has built in wireless networking?

I feel like a complete and utter retard.

(Nice work reading the documentation there, eh?)

  13. Pieteron 23 Feb 2008 at 11:00:39

Oh yeah, did I mention it has built in wireless?
How did you get through the set-up without noticing that one?
So does that mean it might get hooked up sooner?

  14. Mugwugon 24 Feb 2008 at 08:40:43

Hehe… ok, built in wireless is working, I’ve had my ass handed to me by all sorts of online players, but as the ratio of the number of times I’ve died vs. the number of Kills is slowly reaching parity I think I can say I’m getting the hang of things.

Had to let the PS3 whir through a few hours of updates (and an annoying problem with the COD4 update where it would hang after 60 seconds of downloading), but the thing is configured and it appears as if I’m good to go.

Have only been plugging away at the deathmatch stuff as online play is always a little more chaotic than the scripted single player levels (pretty freakin entertaining none the less).

Short version? We’re online and operational. Look for Mugwug and we’ll see if we can’t get something sorted.

  15. Pieteron 24 Feb 2008 at 10:57:57

The death match thing is a trip.
The rifle challenges are kind of a grind, but fun none the less.
I’m starting to enjoy constantly scoring higher every round.
Cool, I’ll see if you’re on next time I log in.
Look for “n0intresT”, going a game with you soon.

  16. Mugwugon 24 Feb 2008 at 11:09:37

Just stumbled across the challenges, but didn’t get a chance to look closely at them. How do you take one of the challenges? I need some upgraded weaponry in the deathmatches, this iron sight stuff is fine for my gun cabinet but everyone else is heavily armed.

How do you take the challenges?

Ah… I put in a friend request for “Impact”. I’ll hunt you down when we get back from breakfast.

  17. Pieteron 24 Feb 2008 at 22:43:14

Well the first few games were fun.
Just curious, are you sponsored by “Coleman”?
    Camper….Grrr.

  18. Mikeon 25 Feb 2008 at 13:28:51

So Rainbow Six: Vegas should only be about $30 and comes with all the extra maps I had to pay for on the 360 version.

For those of you with HDTVs I just found out the hard way to run it in 720p not 1080i. It looks like an Atari 2600 game in the latter resolution.

Looking forward to shooting terrorists with you guys.

  19. Mugwugon 25 Feb 2008 at 16:40:23

Piet: Camper my ass! C’mon now, I’ve got witnesses that I was on the move for easily 95% of those games, including color commentary from Lisa about spending “too much time running around”.

Apologies if the impression was that I was camped for extended periods at the flag points, but I really only stuck around when to break up the pattern of heading to the next flag when you’d captured the most recent.

In ANY event I have a copy of RS:LV now (BTW I was wrong, $40 for the game, not $30, so your used copy was not a ripoff) but sadly no USB headsets for anything under $50. I’ll have to shop around a bit, because I’m not paying $50 for something that has a 2′ cord.

    See you guys online tonight.

  20. Mugwugon 26 Feb 2008 at 13:21:56

Just a quick note here as well.

Acquired comms (bluetooth for $20) and should be good to go around 18:00hrs local (17:00 6beer time) if we’re gonna try this again.

Anyone else reading this that wants in on a PS3 game drop a note to Mugwug on the Playstation Network (or here obviously).
