LIMA (AFP) - Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.

Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.

Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a “strange odor,” local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.

Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said.

Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache.

“Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned,” he said.

Now Caranca, Peru is a long ways away, but isn’t this how the movies always start? A remote incident with strange effects?

Maybe I’ll grab some more ammo while I’m running errands.

Dad: And wouldn’t it suck to be the guy wandering around saying “The seeds of life took my house out!”.

I have to assume any life form piloting that rock was ether a teenager or on there cell phone.
“Ah honey, I wrenched the asteroid, I know it’s late but I’m stuck on Earth. Would you believe some comet just cut me off?”

Sounds like a good plan, or a good excuse, whichever works best!!!

    I heard this yesterday.

I’ll be expecting the zombie horde from the south.

Crud, just when life was getting good for me!

I posted up on this event and said it reminded me of War of the Worlds, but meant the Andromeda Strain.

As of what Doug said about the zombie hords, they’re already from the south and headed for Canada.
