We’ve another digital camera.
Today, amongst our other errands, we stopped at WallyWorld and acquired a new digital camera. We settled on a HP E427 for $84.99 (6MP and 5x digital zoom), added a 1G SD card and we were well under budget, leaving a little extra to go towards the later acquisition of an SLR type digital camera.
I’ve now spent the last few hours monkeying with the camera, and as near as I can tell it’s still an improvement over our old camera, and comparatively streamlined and compact compared to the old Canon Powershot A75.

With the 1gig card you should be set for a while, no?
No bugs to mention, it uses the same USB cable as our Canon did, so no fishing around behind the computer and it leaves me with a spare camera cable that I can either connect at work or connect to the laptop.
More pictures you can count on. I’ll try for some gun porn later today when the lighting is better and Jilly isn’t stomping through the shot.
1 Gig according to the counter the camera maintains means approximately 900 photos or 60 minutes of video can be recorded on the card. The batteries will give out long before the card does. Still, it’s nice to not have to worry about clearing the memory (the Cannon with a 256Meg card would hold a hundred or so high-res photos).
Another nice feature about this camera is that it allows you to set (in the cameras menu) whether it looks like a camera or a USB drive to the computer, which means you can skip the proprietary camera software and just click and drag the photos to a directory if you prefer.
Most important to us is that the camera is about half the thickness of our old camera, and a little less than half the weight. It lacks some of the features, but this one will fit in a shirt pocket nicely.
As I’ve decided to grab an SLR type digital camera at some point in the future having a bare bones point and shoot digital camera is a plus.
All in all I’m pleased. It’s just about what I was looking for, and the price is hard to beat.
