Just for closure I ended up buying Serenity instead of renting it, the local video store had a copy hidden somewhere, but I gave up looking and just plunked down cash as I really, REALLY wanted to watch Serenity again now that I'd seen the series. Interesting characters, interesting situations, a lot of humor. The viewers lost out when it was cancelled. But I think most TV is very uncomfortable with something different, since almost all shows are just different characters in similar situations. Probably because his initial work was "Buffy: The Vampire Slayer" which wasn't as stupid as it seemed but still not the modern work of The Bard that most claim. It became butter stretched over too much bread by the end. There's a fair amount of movies, scenes and even TV episodes I really liked that turned out to be Whedon's.
