Firefly / Serenity

Published by Mugwug at 05:16:49 under General

Firefly!I’m always late to these parties. I typically come across a series that I enjoy a few years after it’s debut, apex and cancellation. That’s precisely the case with the series Firefly, a sort of space-western following the adventures of a the small crew and passengers of a smuggling ship running around the ‘verse.

I’d seen the movie Serenity when it was released to video, and had enjoyed it even though I was unfamiliar with the back story, but it wasn’t until recently when a co-worker loaned me the original series that I really became a fan. The series (and the movie for that matter) is visually pleasing, and a good deal grittier than most sci-fi space shows you’re likely to find. The space-western idea appeals to me (Outland being one of my favorite examples of this blend) and both the writing and acting were excellent.

Sadly Firefly was cancelled after 15 episodes (all of which I have now watched over the last week), and I’ll be stopping by the video store while running errands today to rent Serenity one more time.

It kind of pains me to admit Joss Whedon’s a good writer. Probably because his initial work was “Buffy: The Vampire Slayer” which wasn’t as stupid as it seemed but still not the modern work of The Bard that most claim. It became butter stretched over too much bread by the end.

There’s a fair amount of movies, scenes and even TV episodes I really liked that turned out to be Whedon’s. Of course, the frog line from the first X-Men movie was his, too.

Got the DVD box set for Christmas, which shows two episodes which never aired. Of course, they should have never taken it off the air in the first place.

It was gone before its right time. Recall that, when it ran, it was doomed to the abyss that was Fox’s Sunday night slot….

I have really enjoyed the series…it’s cancellation left a lot of interesting plot lines unanswered. Interesting characters, interesting situations, a lot of humor. The viewers lost out when it was cancelled. But I think most TV is very uncomfortable with something different, since almost all shows are just different characters in similar situations.

I see everyone is on the same page as me on this one.

Just for closure I ended up buying Serenity instead of renting it, the local video store had a copy hidden somewhere, but I gave up looking and just plunked down cash as I really, REALLY wanted to watch Serenity again now that I’d seen the series.

    Great show.

This is my favorite series. To me; this is the best sci-fi that I’ve ever seen. Top notch. I never got into Joss before; but I am now. Firefly is just the best.
