The end of an era…

Published by Mugwug at 10:42:29 under Project: Anti-Zombie Rifle

Anti-zombie rifleToday represents the absolute end of a project that gave me great joy for a long while. That’s right, my Anti-Zombie rifle has been sold. It sits, all packaged up along with spare furniture, magazines and assorted do-dads, waiting for payment from the buyer before it is entrusted to the people at CanadaPost for delivery.

It was a decision I didn’t take lightly, but the SKS-D had been a project filled with “bling” and experimentation. There a few other rifles I’d rather face the zombocalypse with, but that’s a rather narrow application and I’m dying for a new project for which I lack the funds. Amongst the residents of my gun cabinet the SKS-D has languished the longest, and I can only hope her new owner appreciates her more than I have come to.

There will be another anti-zombie rifle project in the future, likely built up around the VZ58, but it will undoubtedly involve far fewer modifications that the SKS-D saw.

Farewell AZR.MkI, we hardly knew you.

You no longer own an SKS?

Turn in your Eastern European Peasant Conscript membership card.

Ah, I am temporarily without an SKS, I am aiming to acquire another Tula SKS in the near future (finances permitting), much like the Longbranch SMLE I figure if I have to have ONE example of the rifle, and ONE only it should have some historical merit.

Besides, I’ll bask in the glow of my Eastern block CZ52 and VZ58 (Czech as they may be) as a temporary salve to my pain.

Damn you for latching onto that detail anyway!

    Please people..
Let us not argue, but instead remember fondly
the rifle that was the corner stone of this blog.
    A moment please…………..
    ….
    OK, I’m over it.
Can we vote on the next project?
I say lever action, in the 40 cal range.

Um, you know this is the internet, right? And you’ve met Erik?

I’ve never seen a conversation involving Erik that wasn’t and argument.

After that last comment, my phoned started ringing…hmmm, the call display says “Mr.Kettle”…

Nice lookin’ piece - I’ve never owned an SKS (either) all my historic merit is ‘Merican stuff, though for family antecedental reasons I’ve wanted a Ljungmann. My carbine with hollowpoints is my zombie gun.

The wife and I are looking at picking up a couple of HK’s. She wants the SL-8 in .223 and I want the UMC in .45

Another carbine I’m looking into is the Beretta Cx4
which can use the same mags as the pistols.

Primary reason I’m looking at it is price.

Reliable Gun and Tackle has them for around $995 whereas the HK UMC is going (at the same location) for $1995

So, Erik, are you going to tell us how mucho it went for and why you didn’t let anyone here know?

    Hmmm? Hmmm? Hmmm?

    Greg: Ahem…

DirtCrashr: Oh don’t me wrong, I’m no huge advocate of the SKS, but you have to admit its an attractive option if for no other reasons that because it is cheap, reliable and almost completely idiot proof (ammunition is pretty damn cheap as well).

That said I’m sure there are better options for anti-zombie weaponry, but I’m still waiting to hear specifics and arguments for and against.

    [hint, hint]

Patrick: I like the look of the storm, but dammit I have a 92F, what do I want with a 9mm carbine?

As for the SL8, well thats Mikes dream rifle, me it’s still the AR180B that haunts my dreams (at about $1200 CDN).

    Ah, reliable gun and tackle.

Honestly brother, never, EVER leave Vancouver. I miss the days of plentiful and varied gunstores in town. These days I’m driving hundreds of KM just to get a little variety, and still not finding the right shiny stuff.

Phil: Hey! No problem, the rifle sold for $600 CDN including 8 AK mags of various capacities (all now pinned to 5 rounds), some assorted SKS accoutrements (mag loader, cleaning kit, assorted hex keys and the like) and original furniture.

I could have probably gotten around $700 for it, but I still consider it an incomplete project gun, and not a “finished product” so I listed it over at CGN for the lessor amount (and it sold in a day).

The good news is that I am in the process of acquiring a relittle K frame S&W in .38 (along with oodles of ammo) that I can amuse myself with, spending the remainder of the proceeds from the SKS sale to purchase some new furniture for my VZ58.

Quite frankly I just desperately needed to buy a new boomstick, and couldn’t really afford it without selling one off.

I test drove the Storm when I was at West Edmonton Mall over the New Year. It’s nice, but for it’s restricted status, it makes it more of a play toy than a serious rifle or even carbine. What it really feels like is an overgrown pistol with molded plastic glommed onto a pistol frame. If you’re going carbine, go for a real carbine, not that.

That said, I’m mulling picking one up if the right combination of budget appropriation and flowcharting of decision making can be done. Or an AR15 variant.

    “Or an AR15 variant.”

Always get yourself a 9mm AR… There was one down at the gun store when I was shopping for that 762×25mm ammo, didn’t even ask to see the rifle.

I know better than that now. Must ignore the shiny, must resist the shiny, must not acknowledge the shiny.

Shiny depletes bank account far too rapidly.

    -GRIN-

I’m still thinking an AR180 is the next rifle that will find a home in my gun rack. Should have had one after the move, but meh.

Turn your thoughts to the shiny side of the force. Lash out and your journey towards the shiny side of the force will be complete!

Well then Mug, I’d say you made a fair deal. Though, in the future, please let us know about any impending sale so as to be able to make offers (please, please, please).

Who would have passed up the chance to pick that one up?
