Sleep-dep range trip…

Published by Mugwug at 21:13:24 under Firearms

Range trip this morning.

A little confusing, but that may be a consequence of the 12 hour night shift I had finished just before heading out to the range to meet Mike, Theodore and Will. No serious plans for the range, just an effort to wear the barrels down a little, and to examine Wills fathers pride and joy (of course the keys to the trigger lock failed to join us at the range, so there was no shooting of this pride and joy).

By the time we packed it in around 12:30 I was a jibbering wreck, but I still had a good time. Next trip out we need more cold-weather gear, and a more detailed plan.

What more detailed plan than “Blow shit up!” does one need. And who needs conciousness, that .44 should have been enough to wake you up.

Sigh. I sooooooooo want a member of the AR-15 family, but unless a spectacular deal comes up, I’m on a rather limited toy budget until the degree is in the can, and then only before law school is done if I sneak it in during a gainfully employed period.

That said, I like your range’s “pocketed berms” with what appears to be a hillbilly shanty as a target area. Are you in training to do raids for the BATF, perhaps?

Theodore: True enough. I meant a few visits where some actual practice is undertaken, more than just “plinking”.

I’m going to have to remember that spotting scope, .223 is just too hard to see on the paper.

Greg: I hear ya…I love my little AR, and you can always go the same route. Buy it piece by piece and assemble the rifle yourself (it’s really not that complicated at all).

Hehe, you’re right. In the picture it looks a lot different. In real life that’s just the worn away face of the berm behind three wooden frames supporting hard sheets of rubber to which the targets are stapled.

Sadly no raids today… we’ll see if we can stage stuff later.

Hey Greg, have a look at Lever’s inventory of AR’s/M-4’s etc. I heard they’re having a sale on.

Trigger lock? He let a small thing like a trigger lock stop him from shooting?!

The last time someone came up to hunt camp without their keys, it took me less than five minutes to remove the trigger locks! LOL!!

Sure, you gotta replace ‘em but the price of replacement trigger locks is the ’stoopidity tax’ for forgetting to bring along the keys ;-)

Actually we had a short discussion on that, but in the end it was decided to leave well enough alone. More out of concern for slipping with a screwdriver and marring the finish of the rifle than out of any concern over the trigger lock itself.

I did get a chance to explain to Will how the “Master” trigger locks are sold in 3 packs at most Canadian Tires, and how you can read the key “code” stamped on the keys. Finding two or three of these combo-packs and all your trigger locks will work with just the one key.

We also discussed combination trigger locks (although they’re another 50% more expensive than the keyed trigger locks).

    Meh…it happens.

Crap, it seems my buddy Rob and I just got to the range that Saturday as you guys were packing up the gear and about to leave, I saw a few CGN patches so I figured it was someone I was familiar with. We were the two guys in a Buick, I had a large black Pelican case with me (with some AR goodness inside).

I have to say, this being my second range trip, the AR was my favorite. Simple and effective. The massive hunting shotgun on my first tip, and Mike’s Enfield were impressive. They really make your gonad’s wiggle in a satisfying way, but I could shoot the AR all day and never get bored.

Definately gotta bring the spotting scope. I want to get good with that sexy little beast. What does a box/bag/bushell of shells for it cost? I want to pitch in for some serious shooting next time.

Plus, I have a massive photocopier at work, so email me the targets and I can go up to 12X18 if you want.

Plus, gotta get Mike’s Esti range membership sorted out so we can take his little toys out of the closet.

I can see the addiction, it’s pure stress relief, but no way I’d get more deep into this one. Got my own expensive habits.

Koalorka: Next time say Hi, always interested in oggling someone elses AR goodness.

Theodore: Ayup… gonna have to be more organized next time. I’m a little out of practice. Methinks I need to acquire a proper shooting bag once again, one that can “grab and go” for range trips so I’m not running down a mental checklist.

We might be able to arrange more trips out in the new year once Will gets his car.

  11. Ted Onyszczakon 03 Jan 2007 at 01:26:09

You know, I own a car too.

Well you guys know I’m game, I’m going to be making a concerted effort to ensure I get out to the range with a little more regularity.

This non-shooting shooter stuff is for the birds.

  13. Ted Onyszczakon 04 Jan 2007 at 11:25:16

Well, if you don’t like birds, then shooting shooter stuff could be for them as well. They make tricky little targets.
