Some experimentation..

Published by Mugwug under General

Mucking around with CafePress recently (Don’t worry, I’m not flogging merchandise, it’s for me - this stuff here, gag gifts). Does anyone have any experience with the quality of the stuff they ship?

I’ve got a few reservations about dumping $50 for what may actually amount to a pile of crap.

[Edited to add: Ok, I admit it. I like the zombie poster calendar. Still no idea as to quality until it arrives, but it seems nifty!]

Absence makes the heart grow…what again?

Published by Mugwug under General

Apologies to my loyal readers for my recent extended absence. I’m afraid the mundane details of day to day life have left me more than a little tired and strained, and I’ve simply lacked the energy to do much more on the internet than checking my email.

Nothing major has occured I assure you. Work continues, as it were, with the amalgamation of my little employer into a larger corporate entity at a snails pace and with tension among the rank and file. The commute remains a daily source of entertainment and terror as I am at once amazed and threatened by the commuters that surround me.

We are well, rest assured. Busy, but well.

[I do apologize for the absence of the weekly zombie posters, I had thought that I had a few more ‘automated’ weekly posts left in the queue. My bad, I’ll rectify that shortly.]

Canada…

Published by Mugwug under General

Referenced while I was listening to AM radio today, I thought I’d share a tribute written about Canada by Kevin Myers back in 2002.

..It seems that Canada’s historic mission is to come to the selfless aid both of its friends and of complete strangers, and then, once the crisis is over, to be well and truly ignored. Canada is the perpetual wallflower that stands on the edge of the hall, waiting for someone to come and ask her for a dance. A fire breaks out, she risks life and limb to rescue her fellow dance-goers, and suffers serious injuries. But when the hall is repaired and the dancing resumes, there is Canada, the wallflower still, while those she once helped glamorously cavort across the floor, blithely neglecting her yet again…

..The Canadians proudly say of themselves - and are unheard by anyone else - that 1 per cent of the world’s population has provided 10 per cent of the world’s peace-keeping forces. Canadian soldiers in the past half century have been the greatest peace-keepers on earth - in 39 missions on UN mandates, and six on non-UN peace-keeping duties, from Vietnam to East Timor, from Sinai to Bosnia..

A day of remembrance…

Published by Mugwug under General

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders Fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders Fields.
- John McCrae

A little updatiness…

Published by Mugwug under General

Things have been the usual pace around here, add to the fray the fact that Lisa quit smoking last week, and I joined in the fun myself on Monday and the house seems a little irritable for the most part. Will keep you posted on the progress as we go, unless we crash and burn of course.

Mechwarrior - Old games revisited

Published by Mugwug under General

Mechwarrior

Mike had a post about this old game, which I remember playing avidly (as I recall, not one person I knew who played this ever followed the story line, and merely ran amok in the universe acquiring mechs and wealth).

You can play it again (as discovered by Theodore) by downloading DosBox0.61 and then downloading the original Mechwarrior game here. It’s not without problems of course. My copy crashes whenever I try to save the game, Mike’s copy seems to crash whenever he finishes a mission which makes gameplay a little less fun.

Suggestions are appreciated.

Who didn’t see this coming?

Published by Mugwug under Politics

…Eighteen-year old Hayder Kadhim launched his campaign Wednesday afternoon in Montreal, demanding tighter limits on handguns, a ban on assault rifles, and the preservation of the national gun registry…
Source: CBC Article

I’m only surpised it took this long.

..handguns should only be allowed in controlled locations such as artillery clubs and shooting ranges..

Handguns are restricted weapons, restricted weapons are only permitted to be discharged on ranges approved by the CFO. Assault rifles are prohibited weapons, and are possessed by only a few gun owners, he likely means “semi-automatic rifles” but that covers a lot of ground, and you’ll pardon my reluctance to let a neophyte decide what is “evil” and what is not. The gun registry is not being dismantled, it’s scope is being rolled back to concentrate on restricted and prohibited weapons.

Victim activists mean well, but being a victim of crime hardly makes one an expert on the topic.

“..Of people who are killed with weapons, about a third of those are with firearms, and two thirds are with knives..” - Stockwell Day

Carefull Stockwell, that knife registry is right around the corner.
