Pre-moving goodness…

Published by Mugwug at 19:48:00 under House Stuff

A bit of racing around highway 401 today. Racing out to the new house to meet the satellite people, then sweeping, mopping, rug shampooing and assorted pre-move administrivia. For the record, it is official, it is our new house. We have the keys and everything.

Our new home

A few of the high points were the arrival of my father with the bookshelves he had custom built for the living room. Typifying space effective storage. These units are 8′ high, and 4′ across each, at approx 7 1/2″ in depth they can handle our staggering collection of DVDs and even a good chunk of my military history books without unduly eating into the limited space in our new digs.

What? No plumbers cleavage?

Mom and my sisters arrived and dived into gardening and upkeep, while Lisa and I scrubbed and cleaned the interior. Step-dad Chris was not to be outdone, and we accompanied him to collect a spare washing machine from one of their rental properties (all the appliances except a washing machine being included in this purchase.

After about 9 hours on the ground, Lisa and I returned to our apartment a mere 122Km away, and tucked into finishing up our packing as the movers are expected first thing Monday morning. I feel certain the chaos will continue unabated for at least the next 24 hours.

Try “…the chaos will continue unabated for the next 48 to 72 hours.” Your brains will shut down some of their cognitive functions at various times during the next few days to keep said brains from melting down from overclocking without cooling intervals. This is especially true as you realize how much money you owe the bank and that you can’t find the box of (insert items) you want right now in your new, larger digs.
None of that stuff is a big deal anyhow. Enjoy your new home!

Looks good brother. Room in the basement for a range?

Movers? I’m so envious. I’ve heard of their existence, but I’ve never been able to confirm them. Like UMO’s.

    More pics please.

    East or West?
    Congratulations on your new home.
Scary, grown up business, that’s what that is..

CM: Ayup… although I suppose the waiting helps, two months waiting for the deal to close has pretty much taken the shock out of this.

Ian: Hey man, no…sadly no range. I’ll bring you up to speed on the plans next time I see you.

Ted: Oh seriously. This will be the third move where we have plunked down the cash for movers, and you gotta trust me.

    IT IS WORTH EVERY PENNY!.

Figure we’re entitled to a bit of a break here, we’ve packed, cleaned and culled. Let someone else move and then we’ll resume our duties.

(and this way I’m not harrassing every able bodied person within earshot to assist with the move.)

Radmila: Ooops. West. Kitchener-Waterloo. Nice place, housing prices are much more reasonable than here in Toronto, and it’s close to my parents.

Most importantly. Jillian gets a yard.

Considering that second last time we moved most of my frying pans went missing, and the last time we moved there was some damage to furniture; it probably is worth the money.

So what does Jilly get first swings? Slide? Bouncy Castle? Pool? Very, very, tiny pony?

I am glad everything is going well. FYI you know the whole clan is dropping by in a few days with Rita? I will be there and I apologize in advance for interrupting the unpacking.

I’ll have to do a more complete inspection upon arrival, but from the exterior shot, you appear to have a garage like structure that could easily house a motorcycle. Just thought I’d mention that. I’ll even lay groundwork for you by telling Lisa stories of my daughter and I bonding while I work on my motorcycle.

I’m also envious about the bookshelves: I’ve recieved e-mails from home advising that a garage sale has happened, which culled a large amount of books from the Wool Suburban Compound. While She Who Must Be Obeyed assured me that no history books were sold, there is that nagging fear that sometime after I get home, I’ll be looking for a certain book and be told “That one? I think it might have been sold. Was it important?”.

    Once again, congrats.

Brenda: Seems we got left a little play castle in the back yard, we’ll be picking up some other odds and sods, but for now thats gonna have to do.

Greg: Mmmm, motorcycle. Another item on my to-do list, especially now that I am close enough to my Dad to annoy him for assistance, advice and general counsel.

The books? I hear ya brother. I had about three boxes of books still packed from our last move, and Lisa had made it clear we were not filling the rooms with books. This was the motivation behind the wall units you see above. I love my books, and especially love being able to grab a reference book when a question pops to mind and looking up the answer.

These shelves are outstanding. They held all but two boxes of books (that is one box better than the apartment) and leaves a nominal footprint in the useable space. Dad really outdid himself here, and some applause is in order. He drilled over 800 holes (the shelves are adjustable for height; 8 feet tall with two holes every inch…lotsa holes).

This may serve as a temporary reprieve for my collection (it doesn’t bode well for additions however).

Walls are to hold bookcases which are to be jammed full of books.

I love books. I can’t give up books. Even 1970’s electronic manuals.

Congrats on the fine looking house!

Wow! You’re finally a homeowner and a parental unit! Kind of a weird thing to consider when you get down to it and all within a four to five year time frame!

Betcha never thought you’d end up with all that in such a short space of time upon your return to TO didja?!

All in all, a big congrats to you and Lisa!

Now you just gotta convince her that a motorcycle (new or old) will fit into the new budget!

    Hey Patrick!

No kidding, no one is more shocked than me. Um, yep, a motorcycle is on the list somewhere. We’ll see how that works out, you know the details will be posted here natch.
