A little clean up, some new linkage.

Published by Mugwug under General

Ok, time (as usual) is in short supply. The Christmas rush is almost upon me, and it involves working two jobs not shopping ’till I drop.

I have spent some time cleaning up the look of the blog, and fixing a few concerns I’ve had for a while (and just never got around to fixing), mainly brought about by a little jealousy over the look of a new addition to the blogroll. Speaking of which;

Tactical Application is a new blog by one of the Zombie Squad Survival Forum members. A clean looking blog, that already features a nice shot of his Tokarev (forgive the pun). Drop by and take a peek.

Jillian's first Birthday celebration!

Well, it was a small celebration but Jilly seemed to enjoy herself.

It’s only our tax dollars.

Published by Mugwug under Firearms

$300 spent per firearm registered.
$500 Million on computer expenses.
$2 Billion in overall costs.

Registering somewhere between 60 and 95% of Canadas firearms. Priceless

Garry Breitkreuz has a report on government spending related to the Canada Firearms Centre, detailing the $500 Million spent on computer contracts. Disturbing that this is not the final figure, I can’t help but wonder what other expenses will surface over time.

Still, if it saves just one life.

[Oh, that was DEFINATELY sarcasm!]

This is an illegal firearm.

Published by Mugwug under Firearms

115 days have passed since I sent in the verifiers report confirming the change of status of the FrankenGarand from a “receiver only” to a fully functional firearm. 115 days and I continue to receive the run-around from the Canadian Firearms Centre. The bottom line at this point remains that I possess a firearm for which I have no registration certificate (or, at best, a completely inaccurate registration certificate), making me (as previously noted) a criminal, possessing an illegal firearm.

An Illegal firearm, despite my best efforts

I am going to document here the exact steps I have taken in attempting to change the registration of this firearm, in a (so far) fruitless effort to comply with our two billion dollar federal firearms registration program.

Jillian, one year in.

Published by Mugwug under Baby Blogging

One of the portrait photos of Jilly at one yearLast week we had Jillians one year portraits done at the local Real Canadian Superstore, a bargain deal at 3 poses for $25.00. Pictured right is my least favorite of the three, but I’ll save the two best ones until after assorted family members have received their copies (I’ve been warned about too many spoilers showing up on my blog).

Considering the source (econo-portrait) they turned out amazing, serving as a credit to both the staff photographer and to Jillian herself.

We’re due for another family portrait, but I was hoping to have that work done by a professional photographer under less “time critical” circumstances where we’re not rushing to get out of the way of another gaggle of kids, moms and distant relatives.

Wow, has it been a year already?

[As an aside, I know I’m completely biased, but she’s damn cute isn’t she?]

Product Review: Innovage “hand-crank” AM/FM Radio

Published by Mugwug under General

Innovage Outdoor hand-crank AM/FM radio

A discussion a while back with Lisa brought me the sudden and shocking realization that we did not own the most basic disaster readiness item, a battery powered AM/FM radio. Essential for keeping up with the news when the lights go off, The importance of this item cannot be understated. Without power you’ll have no access to the news sources we take for granted in everyday life, and I can guarantee that your local kwiki-mart will have sold out of batteries and any portable radios they have before you get there.

It was by accident that I came across the “Innovage Outdoor hand-crank radio” a few days later, on the table of one of those mobile cheap-item stores that flit from mall to mall. The vendor didn’t inspire confidence, but at a price of $15 (CDN) I figured I’d give the radio a try, and worst case scenario I was out the cost of a pack of smokes and a coffee.

We’ve had another crash…

Published by Mugwug under General

It’s entirely possible that you, my regular and loyal readers, have noticed a slight outage spanning the last few days. Yes, it’s true, my hosting service suffered one of it’s semi-annual crashes. The bad news is that this took the site offline for two days, the good news is that they seem to be getting better at this sort of thing and restored their own backups (only a few days old) without excessive prompting from yours truly.

This means I lost exactly one entry as a result of the crash. Murphys law really, as my backup was about the same age as the one they restored.

Meh, go figure.

Garanditis

Published by Mugwug under Firearms

Publicola has an excellent post about his M1 rifle up, go on over and give it a read. If you think I put some thought and effort into my FrankenGarand you’ll be impressed with the planning that went into his.

Springfield M1 Garand, 1942

I own two M1 rifles (the “Garand” if you prefer). The first I bought shortly after I moved back to Toronto. Manufactured by Springfield Armories in 1942, the rifle was hardly in “fantastic shape” (the term “sewer pipe” would be accurate when describing the barrel in fact) when I bought it. My fault entirely as I suffered from a bout of buck-fever when I saw the rifle and plunked the money down after only a cursory inspection so thrilled was I with owning my first M1.

No commentary folks, just a thank you to those that serve, those that have, and those who have fallen. You are not forgotten.
