Ah, elusive time….

Published by Mugwug under General

We’re not short on material here folks, just short on time. I’ve returned to work full time, have resumed my mercenary habits when it comes to overtime shifts. Am still working my second job and trying to wedge all the usual domestic logistics into the unoccupied slots in my schedule I’ve had disappointingly little time to commit much to the projects littering my “pending” box.

Suffice to say a few new zombie movies are patiently waiting for their reviews (these include “Hard Rock Zombies“, “I, Zombie“, “The Dead Next Door” and “Land of the Dead“. A few new arrivals are expected in, “Day of the Dead 2: Contagium” featuring prominently among these last), and work continues on the previously mentioned publishing effort, although it’s turning out to be more labour intensive than I had expected.

If I can get the registration issue with the FrankenGarand sorted I may sell or trade it to kick-start a new firearms project. We’ll have to wait and see however, I am entirely at the mercy of the government on this one.

Stay tuned..

The Fog, remade.

Published by Mugwug under General

In 1980 John Carpenter directed a film titled “The Fog“, it followed the commercial success of “Halloween” by two years, and while it was not Carpenters best work (a position still held by “The Thing” in my humble opinion) it was a solid spook film.

I’d seen previews recently of a remake of “The Fog” due out, and had added it to my might watch list feeling that it was a movie that could benefit from a retelling, but fearing for the execution of the deed none the less. We saw the remake last night, and all my fears were realized on the big screen.

The remake sticks fairly close to the original (hell, even the dialogue was comfortably familiar) although a few key characters have been rewritten for reasons that are not entirely clear. The ghosts themselves arrive not on the 100 year aniversary of the town, but rather when a bag of their artefacts is disturbed on the sea floor, the “ghosts” don’t wipe out all the descendants of those that betrayed them but rather attack the town piecemeal, eventually becoming satisfied when they’ve killed off a couple of the descendants, and whisked away another who resembled the dead leper leaders wife. The fog itself alternates from being a mild visual impedement to an all powerfull supernatural force for no reason.

I didn’t really like this movie, can you tell? The greatest flaw, the most significant error in this film is its refusal to adhere to it’s own logic. I don’t mind a willing suspension of disbelief, it’s a horror movie after all, but throwing in a “twist” at the end, one thats only vaguely been alluded to is a cheap cop-out.

Give it a miss folks, trust me.

Stupid link tricks…

Published by Mugwug under General

An old but entertaining link;

What is? - where you type a word or subject and it returns a series of results from the web. Interesting, amusing and in the case of entering my own handle disturbing. Try “mugwug” and look at the last result.

WTF?

Publish them?

Published by Mugwug under Zombie Stuff

I had a suggestion not so very long ago that I publish my zombie reviews as a book, I toyed with the idea and then shelved it.

I guess I’ve now taken it off the shelf. Discovering I had written reviews for 43 zombie movies, I decided to follow the well worn path of others before me over at the Zombie Squad Forums and surfing over to Lulu.com I figured what the heck.

So, I’ll be writing a few more reviews and revamping some of the older ones to ensure the style is consistent, and then we’ll see how it looks on the printed page. Of course I’ll document the process here, because that’s what I always do, no?

If I buy the only copy, at least I’d have a permanent backup for my my next crash.

Too busy to enjoy a sunset? Nah, but close…

Published by Mugwug under General

Well, we ran out of bandwidth one day before the end of the month, but no real harm done as I’ve been busy (what else is new), did grab the old digital camera while having a cigarette on the balcony last night, as the sunset seemed like too good an opportunity to pass up.

Sunset over Toronto

Hopefully I’ll get a chance to catch up on some administrivia tonight, and finish off those zombie reviews that are languishing in my “draft” folder.
