SKS Stock Project
The Tactical SKS Project had brought about the realization that a pistol grip would be preferable to a standard stock for the SKS. The available array of aftermarket stocks entirely failed to inspire me, and I eventually concluded that I would have to build my own.

(Two tone tiger stripe camouflage)
If you’ve decided to add a pistol grip to your SKS you have two real options, you can purchase a SKS Pistol Grip from Tapco or you can cludge something together yourself. As I wanted a project I decided to begin cludging.
The concept was to take an old Mossberg pistol grip I had, and attach it to a spare SKS stock. To facilitate this the stock would have to be cut back along the lower portion of the wrist, and a removeable mounting system improvised so that the trigger group could still be removed (the trigger group has a rear portion that extends along the stock 3-4cm rear of the trigger guard, a pistol grip will have to overlap this).

(Rifle with first two tone scheme - Zebraflage)
The solution that we (my uncle provided the power tools and creative consultation) came up with was to saw the wrist of the stock back, cut the pistol grip to match and then drive a bolt through the pistol grip and up through the stock at an angle. The bolt is secured by a thumbscrew at the top of the wrist (to allow easy removal). A single pin was also added to the top edge of the pistol grip, and a corresponding hole drilled in the lower portion of the stock to prevent any twist in the grip.
The cut through the stock exposed the forward edge of the storage comparment in the stock (only just) and this (along with the rear swing swivel recess and a few cracks) were patched with liquid steel. A build-up of the wrist above the cut was discussed as we were unsure if the removal of the material on the bottom would weaken the wrist, but in the end it was felt there was sufficient material left, although this may be later undertaken for asthetic reasons.

(After patching, prior to painting)
The camouflage pattern was painted by applying a base coat of Colour Number 1 (Green in one case, white in another), once the paint had dried masking tape was applied across the stock in a negative of the pattern desired. The masking tape was cut using a cloth pattern cutter, and applied by hand. The second color was then sprayed over the tape, and once this layer had dried the tape was removed.
Optimally this process could be used to 3 or 4 color camouflage patterns, although attention will have to be paid to the underlying colors to prevent a predominance of the last color applied.
The mod looks good but the colour scheme is brutal
Ya know what, I’m starting to agree with you…. at first it appealed to me, but I think that’s just cause it was different (I know, I know), I’m gonna have to revisit the urban cam plan this weekend…
I imagine if the white was grey it wouldn’t be so harsh. But it’s neat, you’ve got Van Halen’s SKS.
Hehehe….Mike you kill me, that’s classic…
Sadly I’m already taping the stock again to apply grey, and maybe (time permitting) the tan that I had originally planned on.
The stock looked ok to me until I put it on the rifle, but now it just looks wrong.
Who knew?
Keep it black & white! It’s ‘winter splinter’ camo. Mod the finish on your next project for summer foliage.
Very impressive! You should post pics with total assembly. And might i suggest it would look really cool with a flashlight.
Graham: Nah.. I’m going to redo it this weekend, going for the same pattern only in OD and black or OD and Tan, the white is too much…
Derek: Good idea….done! (the flashlight was added last month)
Looks good but how does it shoot? I personaly would have gone for more of a cadpat cammo design. I’m still waiting for my cadpat underwear in case I have to fight the enemy with my pants down.
Hey Dan,
I’ve taken two cracks at a CadPat design, and it’s murder. I think I may have figured out how to do it properly, but it’s alot of work (the two tone cam pattern takes about 4 hours of painting, masking and then painting again), essentially doubling the time involved or more.
This stock has been a learning experience, and the green/black pattern came out alot better than the white/black.
I’m hoping to put what I’ve learned to use for the CadPat M14 stock. Keep yer fingers crossed!
(CadPat underwear? I hate to ask, boxers or briefs?)
-GRIN-
The new paint job kicks ass! I’ll have to send pics of my yugo sks mods. If only i took the time to take proper pictures. I really have to buy a digital…
It looks even better in person, trust me. I’m tempted to get in on the process and do up my SKS with a yellow/black construction stripe pattern. It would certainly help give it some kind of personality unique to the AR-15.
The OD green looks a lot better- it really gives it a certain weird post-war, eastern bloc kind of aesthetic.
Thanks for the feedback guys… I like the two tone cam, it’s not too busy, but not too boring either. I like it just the way it is (in fact if I had gone with a light gray on the first attempt instead of white it’d likely still be that color…the white was just too bright dammit).
Of course I’ll try something a little more complicated for the next painting effort… hopefully I’ve actually learned something through this.
HEY MAN I THINK UR STOCK IS ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING STOCKS I HAVE SEEN FOR THE SKS, I OWN A YUGO SKS AND I AGREE THAT THE AFTER MARKET STOCKS JUST DONT SATISFIE.
Thanks Travis,
Yeah, I think Choate makes the nicest looking Dragunov style stock available, but otherwise most aftermarket stocks look alike.
I wasn’t really going for something super unique (although I did consider a thumbhole stock, but it’s a bit much work for my limited available time) but wanted exactly whats pictured above, a standard stock WITH a pistol grip.
The paint job is just a bonus…. I think I’m starting to develop some proficiency at painting these things.
That’s realy cool, I’d love to do that for one of my Para’s, any chance you could diagram the cuts and holes drilled?
Wow, Those look Awsome…
Would you Be willing to do a custom ones for other people…
Spooker: Excellent idea, I wish I’d documented this one properly. I’m getting lazy I think. I’ll post some more detailed pics soon.
Ministeve: Sure, why not….it’s not that hard. In the meantime I’ll be sure to document the next paintjob thoroughly and I’ll put a step-by-step up for people who want to give it a try.
Hey if you decide to do these as complete stocks let me know, I might want one and I also set up at some local gun shows I could advertise your service for you.

I hate to be shameless, but I sell MARPAT/CADPAT adhesive paint masks if you’re interested. They’re only $25 for a set, and you can usually do about 2 rifle stocks in one set. They’re applied just like the ones that Lauer Custom Weaponry sells with their DuraCoat kits, only 1/3 of the price. If anyone is interested or would like to see photos, I can be emailed at mccabekyle@yahoo.com
aimsurplus has wood stocks you can play with… cost’d 18.95 with shipping…. should show up in UPS tommorrow… We’ll see how they look
got the stock, nothing spectacular, it is new, Rather Sloppy Workmanship, but should be Ok, when Stripped down
Ministeve, what do you plan on doing with the stock? Any special modifications in the works?
Just gonna paint it gray, I try’d A cammo, and it didn’t come out right…Paint sucked, So I’ll Stick to one color… I didn’t want to mess up a “matching Stock…lol”
I like the pistol grip. I’ve felt the same way about the sks. I would like to see a stock kit with a pistol grip and a parascoping butt, urban assault style. How about posting some “as of right now” pictures. The zebra theme looks kind of neat. What hand guard are you using?
…oh yeah! How did you mount the red dot scope on that bad boy?
Dustin,
I agree. I was (and still am tempted) to grab a generic AR collapsable buttstock and mate it with the spare SKS stock I have sitting here (of course that stock is already slated to be stripped, sanded and refinished as practice for my Longbranch restoration, but after thats done I s’pose I could mangle it).
As for the scope mount, the series of mods to the rifle are documented here and some specifics on the mount (a Millett AK/SKS scout mount) are written up here.
I have searched high and low for information related to a pistol grip stock like yours for the SKS. Your site is the best that I have found. THANK YOU!!!
The O.D. Green and black looks the best. Kind of like a designated marksman rifle. Would like to see an sks with an M4 style stock
i’v seen a solid butstock composit pistol grip in the shot gun news mag.thats what im hunting for. lost the mag , so i’ll keep hunting. yours looks sweet w/b
