So, there’s been a recurring minor issue with the CBR250R. On a cold start the bike will often sputter a bit then die, occasionally with a mechanical clang. It was an occasional issue at first, then it started increasing in frequency until now where it is practically a regular event. It is something I’m not happy with in a brand new Motorcycle with 3200km on the clock.
Took the bike in for service today, and am hoping that the Honda dealer can do that voodoo, that they do so well. There are a few threads on this at the CBR250R forums with some speculation as to what the problem is, but no solid answers.
05 Jul, 2012 – Thursday @0900hrs – Bike dropped at dealer to have problem checked.
07 Jul, 2012 – Saturday @1630hrs – Bike picked up – Dealer states they cannot reproduce issue. Bike stalls on start-up while trying to leave the dealership. Nice.
09 Jul, 2012 – Monday @0700hrs – Stalling continues – see video below.
13 Jul, 2012 – Saturday @1600hrs – Regular stalling issue has turned into a rough idle at startup that lasts for 15 seconds or so. Only one actual “stall” since the 9th of July.
21 July, 2012 – Saturday @0605hrs – The last three starts 9when bike has been sitting more than a few hours) have resulted in a stall. Video taped it this morning. Will have to make another appointment to take it to dealership to get them to look at it.
10 August, 2012 – Friday @0800hrs – Following the advice of one poster on the CBR250R forums I took the bike out a week or so ago and “rang it’s neck” on the local parkway (running it up to redline before shifting) and generally aggressively accelerating etc. Since this one hour session the bike has not stalled, the rough idle is still there.
16 August, 2012 – Thursday @0700hrs – Bike is still NOT stalling. Something to be said for running the bike WOT from time to time I guess.
It’s fuel-injected isn’t it?
Buddy had a similar problem with his CBR-F4i. I’ll see what he discovered and let ya know.
Yep, fuel injected – runs like a top otherwise – I’ll eaglerly await your update, the dealership hasn’t gotten back to me yet – hope springs eternal.
Yup … it’s a PITA, but hold the dealer’s feet to the fire (at least you’ll have a documented history of the problem).
I only speculating but – I would guess it’s a minor ECU problem with the fuel injectors not supplying the proper amount of fuel during those cold starts (either too much or too little could cause starvation or stumble and the stall).
To hit their fuel economy targets, manufacturers now shave things to very fine tolerances. Fuel injection is great when it works; an enigma when it doesn’t
Yep, that’s why I brought it in. Wanted some formal documentation. The problem has become less frequent, as shown in the last youtube clip the bike idles rough for a 15-20 seconds and then evens out.
Will just change where I buy my gas, and will continue to jot down the results in case I need them later.
