Gun stuff? Honestly? Cool…

Published by at 20:13:10 under Firearms

Today I visited the “other” gun store in town, it happens to be directly across the street from the building where I’ve been installing surveillance cameras for the last week. Having finally tracked down and resolved an issue with one of the cameras that had been killing us for a few days I took a moment to wander across the street to check out the “10%-20% off Glocks!” sale at the gun store that had been actively engaged in going out of business the last time I stopped in.

Nice. A short stroll around, two guys manning the counter and a fellow getting them to give him prices on a stack of old long guns he had (recognized the standard sportered SMLE and the Cooey .22lr right away, the others were similar vintage – the sort of stuff that commands $25-$75 in the consignment rack).

A goodly selection of rifles behind the counter, a half dozen or so pistols visible under glass at the counter (nothing really noteworthy I saw..a few Glocks and some .22 target pistol). What caught my eye right away however was the collection of ammo crates and carriers, some Czech 763x39mm on clips on shelves behind the counter.

“Got any other surplus ammo?” says I, suddenly conscious again that my big-30′s are completely out of ammo (I have 20 rounds of 762x51mm, 20 rounds of .30-06 and 20 rounds of .303 British), and that my economical standby’s are running low (200 rounds of 556x45mm and maybe 400 rounds of 762x39mm), even the handguns are low (200 rounds 9x19mm, 400 rounds .38 spcl).

I left with 100 rounds of 762x51mm, I could have spent more but time was running out, and those 10-22s were looking a little too tempting.

Now all I need is a range trip.

I’m in, and I can wrangle Michael if we could find a time where we’re all available, work and all.

Sounds like a plan I could work with… what’s day of the week is easiest for you?

Yep, and after a proper range trip you will be low on ammo again, eh?

100 rounds of 7.62 makes a big difference when you’re down to the last box, eh?
It’s the difference between “Keeping an eye out for a good deal on more ammo”,
and discounting the rifle from your collection because you couldn’t even fill a mag.
(Not unlike my Nagant revolver, MAS and the .32 Walther.)
I’d be willing to bet when the “fit hits the sham” the M14 will get all the love (Assuming you’re stocked on ammo).
Merie’s right, one good day at the range and you’re out.

    Signs that I’ll stop for:
10-20% off Glocks, $2.99 Steak dinner and “As seen on TV”.

I can make almost any mon-wed-fri work given enough notice. it’s the dork that’d have issues with a weekday. Unless he were to have an illness.

Problem with illness is I would be the first person in my department to book a day off sick since 2007. Hardy lot, us Operators.

    Operator? Cool.
“If you know the name of the crime being committed enter it now.”
    BEEP-beep-Beep
“You have entered “Fratricide”, if you know the name of the sibling being murdered
    please enter it now.”

It’s only a little less glamorous than that:

Me: Tenant Services, Mike speaking, can I help you?
Mook: Yes I had a meeting booked for 9 AM and the tables and chairs are not set up yet..
Me: What time is it now, sir?
    Mook: Quarter after eight.
Me: So I guess they still have time to set them up, don’t they, sir?
    Mook: Well I-
Me: Sir, if you wanted the tables set up at 8 AM we could have happily obliged, however as your request was for 9 AM, they will be set up for 9 AM. If you like I can transfer you to the Dockmaster to discuss the expediency of the work.
Mook: Yes, I’d like to speak to him.

Joke’s on him. Bear in mind I perfectly maintain that cheery fake enthusiasm voice service reps use these days. However, the Dockmaster is a fucking monster, so any condescension from me will be quickly forgotten in a tsunami of bilious rage.

Can you legitimately book a day off, say for a checkup on you teeth or something? Do they owe you any lieu time?

  10. Mikeon 05 Dec 2008 at 12:22:42

I’m out of lieu and they don’t allow entire days off for checkups. I will be collecting a pile of OT at the end of the month. I can cash a bit of that in.

  11. Mugwugon 05 Dec 2008 at 13:56:06

Hrm, I’d need to request a day off but that’s the only logistical headache.

  12. Pieteron 08 Dec 2008 at 10:37:14

Erik, any chance you can spin down and pick me up on your way to the range?
I’ll pay for the gas. Or at least part of it.
