CATV / CCTV Distribution – Round II

Published by at 09:05:19 under Budget CCTV

RF ModulatorThe new modulator arrived the other day and was immediately pressed into service by yours truly. Going my preferred route with this sort of thing we’re using a surplused commercial RF Modulator instead of a consumer packaged one.

The results are excellent, well beyond my expectations and the cost was about 50% of the modulator I had previously used (and which had died almost immediately). The downside is that a portion of the manual included with this device is well beyond my level of understanding, so there is the remote possibility that I have configured it incorrectly.

I have ordered a second identical modulator tentatively for use as a “spare” although it may be pressed into service to distribute satellite across the CATV system in the house (more on that cludge later).

The lengths of Coax running up the side of the house have been pulled down, and it looks worlds better, hopefully I can repeat this process on the other side of the house shortly.

Ok, that’s it for now.

    So…It works?
    It’s all together now?
Don’t want to sound critical, but, the “Stuff nailed to a board, nailed to the wall”
    look is kind of ugly.
Do we get a new set of “Feed” pictures?

Stuff nailed to a board, nailed to the wall

Oh ye of little faith, that stuff is screwed on to a board that’s screwed to the wall… heathen. Nailed indeed.

This is the operational mock-up, it works but there is yards of coax spooled above the board as it will be moving to it’s final home soon. It should shed the ersatz appearance shortly, but for now I haven’t wanted to commit to a design when the final dimensions of the devices were unknown.

As for the feed? No, Sorry, I can’t overcome the basic resistance to publishing any current pictures or details of the system. All the updates to date have been for the second must recent revisions, and that trend will continue.

That does make the overhaul exciting as I can finally publish a completely unrestrained and boring detailed view of the old system highlighting EVERY SINGLE SHORTCOMING of it.

Pictures, screen caps…everything but scratch and sniff really.

I’ll send you the private URL for the project write-up as soon as I flesh it out a little more.

    MugWug:

Thank you for keeping us informed. I hope that everything works out with the new system.
