Zombie Postal Match 5 - Milsurp Deanimation

Published by Mugwug at 14:05:13 under Zombie Postal Match

Based on a few exchanged comments over at What the hell am I doing here? I’ve decided the next match will be for the less modern occupants of the gun safe.

Ready?

A quiet day, almost perfect in fact, and you and a friend are wandering out to your favorite parcel of empty land to run a few rounds through your newest acquisition, a beautiful old -insert rifle name here- you can’t wait to try out. As you approach your private range area a man stumbles out from the treeline immediately ahead.

Dressed in the tattered remnants of a three piece suit stained along the front with some sort of black liquid he certainly doesn’t “blend” with the countryside. You call out to him, now 40 yards away, and on hearing your voice he changes direction and begins shuffling towards you groaning loadly.

As the distance shortens you can clearly see massive injuries to his head and right arm. You’re conflicted, is this the survivor of some massive car wreck from the nearby highway or (having just spent the previous night watching zombie movies on TV) is this a reanimated corpse come to ruin your day? Your friend quickly decides to render aid, and despite your warnings goes racing up to the man. He is immediately attacked and goes down fast and hard. You’re rooted to the spot, your confusion momentarily overwhelms you until you see another stumbling corpse exit the foilage, quickly followed by a third.

Confusion evaporates as you fumble open your box of shells and begin loading your rifle, hoping against hope that the guy who sold it to you wasn’t embellishing when he described it as dead accurate.

Shoot to be as follows:

Standard 8 1/2×11″ Zombie Target

Using your choice of Military Surplus long guns (manufactured not after 1957 shall we say?) all targets with up to eight rounds from a standing position.

Stage 1: Engage a single target at 25 yards (the first zombie) with one round to prevent him from completely consuming your friend, who’s condition is as yet unknown, a miss is carried forward to the third stage.

Stage 2: Engage 4 targets at 100 yards (the new arrivals) with 4 rounds. Misses are carried forward to the third round.

Stage 3: Engage one target at 25 yards (your friend, whose condition is no longer unknown) and any missed targets from the previous stages with three rounds in total.

Deadline: If you’re going to take part, lets get it done by Christmas.

This should be a cakewalk really, but I’ve not had any of my milsurps out in some time, without a warm-up session I’m a little worried as to how they’ll perform

I left you hanging on the last match, so, I’ll knock this one out ASAP.
What’s the target? Just a DPS style?
    Pre-57? No prob…
If I ever get out of LAX, and get back into Tejas that is…

Hopefully you meant rifles must be pre-1957. Oh, standing shots too! Not the easiest with the 48″ MN 91/30 but I’ll do what I can. Guess I need to get the Mosin zeroed in and ready to go!

Thanks for the MilSurp Postal Match!

    A Smelly or a K-98 versus the Undead…

As Tony Shalhoub said in Galaxy Quest - “It’s the simple things…”

Piet: What? LAX? Is there a story here I’m missing? Give me a call when ya get a mo…

Red: Whoops, ayup…pre-’57 vintage only. Typo corrected! (sorta changes the flavour of things with only post-1957 rifles don’t it?)

I’m likely going out to shoot the match tommorow, but am still unsure as to whether I’ll drag the Smelly or the M1 along for the ride. Decisions, decisions, decisions….

    Doug: I love that movie.

Guess I could use my M1 Carbine, I presume I’ll have to remove the red dot sight?

I picked out the best of my 7.62×54R and it looks like Saturday will be my range day.

Doug: I’d love to see how a M1 Carbine does. One of my favorite rifles!

  7. redon 27 Nov 2007 at 19:30:19

uh… brain fart. make that, Thomas, I’d love to see how ye olde M1 Carbine does.

Looks like Saturday is going to be range day. Hopefully the weather holds out.

I’ll have to wait till Tuesday next. I know it’s wierd, but my schedule is 8, 10 hour days on then 6 off. So next Tuesday is my Saturday #1.

If it’s a new acquisition, you can’t zero it in first - right? I read this to mean: you pull out your pre-1957 rifle, load it with typical practice ammo (probably not match grade) and your first 8 shots are the contest. That would fit the scenario, right?

    Greetings,

I’m not familiar with your rules, so could you give me a bit more detail?
How do you submit the targets?
Can you enter more than one rifle?
What are the rules pertaining to sights?

    Thanks

Red and Thomas Cool! Looks forward to hearing/seeing how the shoot went!

JRD: Ayup.. eight rounds seemed fair for 6 targets at relatively short ranges. I haven’t had any of my older milsurps out in over a year, and I “think” they’re all dialed in at 100 yards, but you can be sure I’m going to be watching that first shot with some trepidation.

We’ll allow a soptting scope or binocs to be used to confirm the shots (if these were zombies they’d fall over and not move anymore if it was a “kill”, no such luck with paper).

    Should be ok.

Merle: Sorry Merle, never really had any rules as such. This thing sorta evolved between my brother and I am trying to keep each other motivated to practice more often.

    I’d say the rules in this instance would be;

    1. Enter as many rifles as you want, provided they are pre-1957 manufacture.
    2. Standard sights, or similarly dated optics would be fine. Red dots and modern optics (it’s only 100 yards after all) should be left at home for the day (or be sure to note the rifle was so equipped when submitting results).
    3. Targets can be “submitted” either by posting the targets (with accompanying notes - ie range, sequence etc) on your own blog, or emailed to me (at mugwug at moral-flexibility.net) and I’ll post them with the other results.

(Hang in there for the snow, pretty sure it’s working it’s way down to you….although it’s just barely staying on the ground up here right now)

  12. Merleon 28 Nov 2007 at 22:07:01

    OK, thanks.

I looked at the target & wondered about the significance of the crosshairs, so thought I’d ask.

My only two scoped MILSURPS have modern optics, so they would not be a good choice.

I belive this would be a good way to play with the carbines, as something like a M-N M91/30 is a bit heavy for me - I don’t do enough offhand shooting, I guess.

I don’t know if you would be interested, but there are a number of Postal Matches going on down here. If you are interested, I’ll forward the contact info to you.

    Have a good one.

One more question, if I may.
When I open the target, it is pretty blurry.
When I print it, it is still blurry.
May I presume this is intentional, and that my ‘puter and/or printer is not about to crap out?

    Thanks,

    Merle

Merle: Blurry? Really, it’s not a perfect target but the lines making up the circle around the targets head should be pretty sharp. If these are blurry then it might be your computer and/or printer.

I guess a better description would be a pixel / digital descrepancy, as I get that waffle look. Think I’ll play with the display settings & see if I can coax this old machine into a better presentation.

I thought maybe you were trying for that soft, out of focus look so that certain people wouldn’t be offended. After all, zombies should be ugly, right?

The circles / cross hairs are pretty clear though, so it’ll be OK.
If only I had a color printer!
Maybe Santa will bring me one this year ……

    Have a good one

    Merle
