You must have watched 28 Weeks Later recently, because this is your second poster using them. I am just wondering how far they are going to take it, 28 months, years, decades. The main thing I pull away from the movie is what happens to a disarmed society, how the government does as it wills against them.

Whoops. You’re right, of course. I tend to grab the screeen caps as I’m watching the films, I try to mix them up a bit and must have set this one up in the queue without paying close attention.

    My bad.

I’m hoping the series ends with 28weeks. While I didn’t think the movie was horrible the downward trend in sequels is obvious here, and it should be laid to rest before it accelerates downhill.

Ayup. Big reinforcement there on the gummint looking out for your interests, no?

I think one more out of the 28 to make a trilogy and then lay it to bed after that.

Needs to be a Prequel. 28 Months Later would seem… lazy.

28 Hours later - the beginning of the rage plague spread.

Mugwug - ever think about setting the posters to music for a YouTube video? I’ve been having an itch for the past few months.

According to Wikipedia (and I cannot believe I just said that), there are already plans in the works for a third iteration of the 28 Whatever-the-Hell Later series. I mean, they have to resolve the whole spreading-to-the-world thing.

That said, the first was considerably better than the second… Always seems to be that way with sequels, though, with few exceptions.

    Argh…

..In March 2007, plans were announced by Danny Boyle to create a “third chapter” of the film franchise, which may be given the title 28 Months Later with a 2009 release date,[33] thus creating a trilogy. Boyle has stated that his thoughts are to set the movie in Russia…
Source: Wikipedia - 28 Weeks Later

    Hrm…set in Russia, wasn’t that ROTLD4 and 5?

  7. Dougon 25 Nov 2007 at 04:04:59

Just the beginning of ROTLD4 was Russia. I believe.

OR it could have been 5. But the vast majority of both films took place in North America.

  8. Mugwugon 25 Nov 2007 at 08:01:54

In all seriousness, ROTLD 4 started at Chernobyl, and was supposed to take place in North America for the remainder of the film, the majority of the cast of both 4 and 5 belied this, and the Eastern European flavour of the films was impossible to shake.

A third installment of the 28 measurement of time here Later might be ok, but I suspect it’d just prove the rule that sequels spin downward capitalizing of the success of the first movie, and relying on fan loyalty.

I’m hoping I’m wrong, particularly if they go through with it, but only time will tell.

Well, we can always look at the Die Hard Films as an example.

    Die Hard - Excellent.
Die Hard 2 - let down.
    Die Hard 3 - Excellent.

Haven’t seen Live Free or Die Hard, but I love the theme song…

Plus, we are talking about Danny Boyle returning to the helm of the 28 X Later series.

I still think 28 Hours Later sounds better than Months.

  10. Mugwugon 25 Nov 2007 at 21:08:03

True, the sequel suckiness is not a constant.

    Alien - Great
    Aliens - Better
    Alien3 - WTF?
Alien Resurrection - Better than 3 but nowhere near two.

    Resident Evil - Good
    Resident Evil 2 - So-so
Resident Evil 3 - Uh? What?

You roll the dice, as much as I’d love another solid zombie movie, the chances of it killing the franchise always pushes me more towards the cautious side.

I agree with you, I’d rather see “28 Hours before” or “28 hours later” than “28 months later”. I think they’ll push something through, after all it’s still a profitable undertaking, I just wish they’d do some research into zombie cliches and skip the more obvious ones, the ones so blatantly demonstrated in the most recent installment.

-Fortified houses made of paper mache
-Ineffective military response, despite this being the SOLE circumstance they had prepared for.
-Preponderance of armed military personnel every EXCEPT the location where a the only survivor found in the last 4 months is being kept.
-Corraled unarmed civilians standing by to be infected.

While these elements do allow the plot to move forward at a steady clip, they ALL feel like cheats. I’d have preferred a little thought go into it, that the containment measures be proven inadequate not incompetent, the military response hampered by the humanity of the soldiers not their ineffectual response.

I could go on but you get the idea. These things are as cliched in zombie movies as “spring loaded cats” and it cheapens the effort, and insults the intelligence of the audience.

    -sigh-

I need to become a zombie script consultant.

Had a fresh thought - 28 Minutes Later, given a sufficient staff at the monkey facility would be WILD. Bonus - chimpanzee attacks, though those might have to be suit actors doing the rage-chimp attacks.

The thought of rage-powered chimps seems a fertile ground for a good writer. They’re already three times normal human strength - though the human ragers didn’t seem that much stronger than normal.

Doug I’m in total agreement with you, done right the initial outbreak could be an action packed ride. Cover the break-in by the animal rights group, infection, attempts at containment (assuming initially police and then military) and carrying into the chaos that was hinted at in 28 Days.

Wouldn’t require massive locations, the facility and it’s environs (typically fairly remote anyway, no?) would be adequate.

Personally I’d guess that Russia is easier for them, they can deal with the spreading outbreak in whatever fashion they choose, and are free to explore new ground, but I’d personally like to see more backstory fill-in.

Which pretty much ensures that it’ll not play out that way.

    -sigh-

Again, I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

28 Minutes Later could be the Alien Resurrection/Rocky Balboa of the 28XL franchise. We can suck up a hit with the Russian outbreak, and again, this IS Danny Boyle here. As much as I adore Idris Elba as an actor, and was excited for him to be in Weeks after his masterful three seasons on The Wire, the writing wasn’t up to Days.

Boyle is a smart writer and an excellent director. He could just give Months the oomph it requires.

And S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Shadow of Chernobyl proved that a monster-infested Russia can be most fun and colorful.

STALKER is a great game. I wish my comp had a little more power for the open area maps but other then that it was quite good.
