I’ve been itching to take a crack at the long-guns when it comes to the gun pron, but I’ve found they’re quite the PITA to photograph properly, too long to get much of a variety of shots (muzzle-butt, butt-muzzle…did I miss anything?) and the close-ups are difficult to frame properly.

Ok, whining aside. This is my 1942 Springfield Armories M1. Rebarreled with an appropriately dated Springfield barrel, and wearing all correct vintage Springfield parts (except for the rear sight), furniture I did cheat on and threw the rifle into a new Boyds Walnut stock.
The bayonet is not correct, but I was more interested in acquiring a pointy bit that fit, than spending bucks on one from the same year of manufacture. It shoots straight, and if I could afford to shoot it more often I’d have it out to the range almost every trip (ironic that I have 100 some-odd enblocs for it, but only about 20 rounds of .30-06).
If you’re a Canadian you’re familiar with the Heritage Minute shorts that appear on TV from time to time. I’ve nothing against these shorts, anything that encourages interest in our nations history is hardly likely to rate as a “bad thing” with me. It is the parodies of these minutes, however, that are almost always more entertaining than the originals (available here).
This Hour has 22 Minutes has done more than it’s fair share, and one of their mocku-minutes is posted below, give it a viewing.
At least this tradition we’re recognized for around the world.
We’ve only recently given Jilly free reign to play unsupervised in her room on the second floor. Naturally while she’s upstairs and we’re downstairs we’re listening for thumps, footsteps leading into our room, screams and the worst noise of all for a parent…nothing.
Today the sound of nothing registered with Lisa before it did with me, and I was interupted at my desk by Lisa calling for me to bring the camera upstairs, to find this;
Both Lisa and I were laughing about this. We really have been quite lucky with Jilly, who now just about to turn three has really not gotten into much trouble around the house (we’re also pretty good about keeping things locked down). So we took this as our due, convinced Jilly that she had done well shampooing her hair, and it was now time to rinse.
Today, amongst our other errands, we stopped at WallyWorld and acquired a new digital camera. We settled on a HP E427 for $84.99 (6MP and 5x digital zoom), added a 1G SD card and we were well under budget, leaving a little extra to go towards the later acquisition of an SLR type digital camera.
I’ve now spent the last few hours monkeying with the camera, and as near as I can tell it’s still an improvement over our old camera, and comparatively streamlined and compact compared to the old Canon Powershot A75.
Marko has a post up showing a Sporterized M1 Garand that was for sale at an online auction site. While it’s one of the nicer “bubba’d” Milsurps I’ve seen I cannot help but inwardly cringe when I think of the original rifle being treated so poorly.
Original auction and detailed pics are located here (it sold for $500 and change, what’s a Milsurp M1 go for South of the line?).
I prefer my M1 retain it’s classic look thanks.
What do you think? Piece of history or sporting rifle?
I tend to treat things with a degree of skepticism until I witness them myself. Examples of this abound on this website (shooting coconuts to simulate zombies noggins and the effectiveness of anti-zombie weaponry comes to mind first and foremost) and I’ll expect that’ll continue.
Recently we’ve been discussing long range accuracy, albeit in the context of claims made by shooters of unknown quality. My brother Pieter and I rarely seem to shoot beyond 100 meters, and with these claims in mind Piet has gone out to the range to test his mettle at 300 yards.
It’s an interesting read, and some good photos (I so need to pick up a new digital camera).
Martin Niemoller is often quoted by those warning of a slippery slope, advocating an aggressive defence of rights at each and every encroachment and long before those rights and freedoms have been stripped away one piece at a time. Protecting everyones rights as opposed to just those affecting us as individuals.
