Old Paramedics Guide to being a Citizen Lifesaver
Excellent stuff, amusing and true no doubt. Favorites are;
1. Make sure they are breathing. Yes? Good. No? Adjust head position. Don’t worry about spinal injuries. If they ain’t breathing, they don’t care, so you shouldn’t either.
4. Don’t pull anything out of the victim regardless of whether it belongs there or not.
Go read the rest here.

Thoughts?
Well we’ve had the modified “Sleek Harbour” theme in place for a few days, we’ll now move on to the second in our experimental themes. Second was Flat which is another two column fixed width theme for WordPress.
Ok, we’ve moved ahead of schedule to the last theme, “Adventure”, having been only slightly modified for my blog.
Feedback is appreciated.

Poor sick Jilly…
It looks like Jilly caught something nasty, and for the past few days has been suffering through a mild fever and more recently a minor case of hives. This, naturally, has not made for a happy Jilly, nor as a consequence happy parents.

Sunday night saw Lisa pulling beside duty, and last night as the nocturnal festivities commenced I stepped up and took over so Lisa could get a little sleep before going to work. I had managed to get about 4-5 hours sleep coming off my Sunday night shift, and was ill prepared for an all nighter with Jilly rapidly alternating between playful and whiny.
Admittedly I passed out around 0300hrs with Jilly climbing off me to find more exciting entertainment. I stayed awake long enough to make sure the gates blocking her access upstairs (Sleeping Lisa) and downstairs (Basement fraught with peril) were in place, and then collapsed. According to the living room clock I awoke every 20 minutes or so to check Jilly, and around 0500hrs both of us collapsed into a fitful slumber on the couch, to be awakened at 0700hrs when it was time to take Lisa to work.
We’re not at our best today, but I’m doing my best to prevent any epic naps on Jillys part (and as a result on mine as well) so that tonight might bring fitful sleep for both Lisa and I.
[This post was rewritten after my second cup of coffee when I came to the realization that it made no sense in it's previous form.]

Range day, new pistolas…
Today was a day off. Jilly in daycare and Lisa at work, my errands list suspiciously small so I snuck off for a few hours at the range to give the new S&W Model 14 and (having finally obtained some ammo for it) the CZ52 some trigger time (The CZ52 is leaving soon to join Mikes collection, and I’m loathe to pass on a firearm I’ve not had a chance to try).
Never having fired either of the pistols before made it a bit of an exciting trip for me. I had been told time and again the CZ52 spits a tongue of flame out the end (common to Tokarevs I am told, but again this is as close as I have come) and was looking forward to checking this out for myself. So I raced into the indoor pistol range, spent a few minutes figuring out the controls for the overhead heaters (thank God!) and then set up the digital camera to record video and had at it.

(This is a screen cap of the video from the CZ52.)

Resigned…
Well, that’s the end of that.
The last few shifts at work have been the kiss of death for the current arrangement. I simply cannot do the 200km commute anymore. Last week I interviewed for a similar job much closer to home and was offered it. The pay is less than I am used to, but the distance is less than 25% of my former commute, so I’m figuring between fuel and drive time I’m coming out even.
This should mean more sleep, less driving and hopefully a little more blogging.
[Edited to add: Of course I'll miss the friends I've made at Emerald Security and I have my fingers crossed for those that are left behind. Here's hoping the last phases of the absorbtion into Securitas Canada are entirely hiccup free.]

Death and…oh yes, taxes.
I have a love-hate relationship with the Canada Revenue Agency, I’ve done battle with them a few times and in all honesty the best outcome so far could be considered a draw, and it truly was the exception not the rule.
It’s never degenerated to a garnishment of wages, although back in ’99 or so they did seize my bank account for a brief period when I lost my sense of humour and suggested to one of their representatives that they commit an anatomically impossible act with an animal of questionable lineage. ‘Nuff said on that one really.
You see I’ve typically had more than one job at a time, and as a result am usually underdeducted. To offset the inevitable discovery that I’ve paid less than my fair share of taxes I’ve fallen into the habit of having my employers deduct a little extra from paycheque to paycheque to lessen the blow that falls once a year. This year I really only answered to one employer, but neglected to realign these extra deductions and as a consequence expected (and according to our calculations will receive) a significant return. A good portion of which is slated to be applied against our municipal taxes.
-sigh-
I don’t resent them for taking my money, I resent their wasting it so efficiently.
They have made the process fairly painless these days however. Our taxes were completed online with UFile.ca, then the prepared forms were NetFiled straight into the gummint computers. I can check on the status of my refund through CRAs E-pass system (the E-pass system also allows change of address, change of bank account info and so forth online once the registration process has been completed, and assorted hoops jumped through). Now I simply have to await confirmation that the gummint agrees with our caluclations and deductions etc, and the money will appear like magic in my bank account.
Ain’t technology grand?
