Light blogging, mind melt…

Published by at 10:03:18 under General

I’ve a few days off and should probably catch up on some blogging but I’m in the midst of switching my CCTV computer over to Linux. A bit of a learning curve here, and I’m getting better but have hit some hiccups with the installation of the new monitoring/recording package.

I suspect I’m the problem, but hopefully I’ll have it resolved soon.

In the meantime I’m still trying to make the ‘sudo apt-get install medium double-double’ command to work.

Synaptic is easier to deal with than apt-get.

I have some experience with Linux and I’m actually on vacation for a week if you want to shoot some questions my way.

Welcome to the addivctive but futile and frustrating world on Linux.

I’m so frustrated with Windows that I’m planning to go Linux when I get a laptop. It HAS to be a more stable, straightforward OS than XP or (shudder) Vista.
My (Outlook) email has glitched badly. Can’t see the contact list unless I open it from an email I’m going to send. If I reply to an email, I have less than a minute to compose my response and hit send before it crashes Outlook and wipes out the email. Ech!

KristopherL Good advice with respect to Synaptic, didn’t resolve the issue, but made figuring out the packages a lot easier.

Theodore: Not sure what help you can offer. It’s a series of minor problem fixes. Originally it was the the C compiler was not working, now the install/configure script can’t find the MySQL header file (nor can I for that matter).

Just the usual computer stuff, going online, checking a few forums and googling the error messages until I find a fix that works. I’m farther along now, and a side benefit is that I’m beginning to learn my way around Linux.

Carbonman: I’d like to give Linux a two thunbs up, but I’m running into two many minor issues with what should (according to reports) be a hassle free installation.

I’m generally impressed with Ubuntu (the distrib I went with), but there are a few too many hiccups here for me to heartily recommend it. I guess we’ll have to wait and see if I can get it working at the end of the day, and if I can figure out if the problems I’m experiencing are Ubuntu related or Mugwug related.

My impression is that it definately seems a lot more stable than windows. The problems are configuration related, not stability issues.

    Meh…

First sign that I’m reading too many gun blogs …

I was quickly skimming through your post, and paused to wonder why anyone would want a concealed carry TV. D’oh!

Hey, Carbonman … Outlook has been a problem for years. Most sensible folks switched to Thunderbird (there’s a Linux build available, too) ages ago. For one thing, it gets you away from all those Microsoft Active-X and Internet Explorer (showdocvw) linkages :-(

Thanks, Matti. I’ve been planning to switch to Thunderbird but want to get everything back in place with Outlook Express so the conversion goes smoothly. I know MS products fulfill a need, but the performnce and stability problems are a horrific headache.
I’m something of a Luddite, my daily agenda is a Quo Vadis Trinote. Paper never crashes, the manual synch always works and there were no DST problems.
Mugwug, maybe I’ll send you my laptop when I get one, and you can do the Linux config. You’ll become an expert on the stuff!

Add more repositories to /etc/apt/sources.list. See the unofficial ubuntu guide for help on this.

Then tell synaptic in its prefs to prefer compatability to latest versions.

Apt-get and synaptic will paint you into a corner by grabbing the very latest versions of everything, if you let it.
