VZ58 Tampering, font sights

The idea of using the Williams Firesight from my Anti-Zombie SKS-D in the VZ58 has been stuck in my head for the longest time. A casual inspection shows the two front sight assemblies to be superficially similar, but it wasn’t until this evening that I took the time to take things apart enough to see if it was possible.

The short version is “No”. The SKS utilizes a long narrow channel running front to back with a hole midway along it allowing the front sight post to screw into the seat. The VZ58 makes use of a round opening only, with no corresponding channel. The Williams firesight has a long narrow bottom portion that allows a screw to be passed through it along the empty hole used by the seat.

Two other problems immediately noticed were the fact that the diameter of the VZ58 seat channel is greater than that of the SKS-D, and the distance between the seat channel and the bottom of the front sight guard is greater on the VZ58 than on the SKS-D. In practical terms this means that the screw that came with the firesight would pass directly through the channel, and even if this was replaced the firesight would sit significantly low once installed.

While none of the problems are insurmountable, they do tend to dampen the experiment and I called in even. Putting everything back where it started.

Pity really…
