Photographic memories…

Published by under General

Our little family unitWe recently had a family portrait done. Nothing special mind you, but we felt it would be nice to supply the assorted members of the family with something for their already cluttered mantlepieces. Deceptively normal looking aren’t we?

Lisa recently commented on the number of photos I arrange to have taken during range trips and so forth, equating this with vanity. Now I’m not disputing there may just be a grain of truth in that, but the honest reason is that I regret having no photos for so many events in my life. My photo collection numbers about 75 photos, and spanning the last 30 years that’s averaging 2.5 photos a year.

The majority of the pictures are throw aways, but now and again there’s a pic that speaks to me, one that I would very much like to set aside and keep for posterity. A reminder of better days, a reminder of worse days….maybe just a reminder.

This portrait is like that, it doesn’t seem like alot now, but I suspect I’ll value it tremendously not so very long from now.

Hang tight folks….

I hate our current apartment. It’s no longer a mild burning irritation, it’s blossomed into a boiling anger.

The apartment is at ground level, and there’s next to no air circulation through it making the recent increase in temperature rather uncomfortable, the kitchen sink gurgles randomly at all hours (I assume due to a build up of gunk/schmutz in the trap), the hike up from the parking garage has become a huge headache lugging Jillian up two different flights of stairs, and through four seperate doors. We’re now living among boxes and boxes and the telephone service has never managed to climb above “shitty” with constant line noise and interuptions.

A consequence of the last item is that while my time on the internet has not decreased, my USEFUL time on the internet certainly has. We seem to average a 28.8 connection to the net, but the actual speed at which we access anything usually trickles down to about 5kbs or so as the poor modem attempts to handle the static, random popping noises and crosstalk from neighbors carrier (I can’t recall the last conversation I had when I didn’t hear the pong-pong-pong sound of a modem connecting wafting across the criss crossed line).

Dropped connection count for this post: 4

Yes, as much as I hate the process of moving I have never before in my life longed so much to get started at it.

I may be updating infrequently until we’ve completed the move, we’ve also discussed returning to high speed once we’re settled into the new digs (it seemed a pointless exercise to even consider DSL with the telco problems we’d been having here).

Postal Shenanigans…

Estonian T-shirtSo Canada Post shows up at my door yesterday holding a large envelope, addressed to the “Al-Quaeda Traning Base Supply Depot“. The postie (who has become used to my receiving all sorts of packages) raises an eyebrow as she hands the package over, but to my disappointment fails to comment on this at all.

I am, naturally, expecting a visit from CSIS politely inquiring as to my connection with terrorist groups.

Smiling as I wander into the living room, I open the package from Greg and find the T-shirt pictured. So I s’pose its true, my friend went to Estonia and all I got was this lousy t-shirt.

Cool, huh?

Project: Franken-Garand

The to-do list for the project is rather long, but featured prominently was the refinishing of the receiver that is the heart of the rifle. I had sworn that no “historically significant” parts would be harmed in the assembly of this rifle, and as a result I acquired a Breda receiver from Districorp some time back. There is undoubtedly some history to the receiver, but as it’s post-war any guilt I feel is minimized.
