SKS – Anti-Zombie Rifle Completed

Published by at 19:16:32 under Project: Anti-Zombie Rifle

A dead coconutOn Friday Mike and I drove to the range for (what I was hoping would be) the final series of range tests for the AZR Tactical SKS. To keep things interesting I managed to acquire a dozen coconuts as “reactive targets” for our efforts (At $0.89 a pop, it’s hard to go wrong).

The rifle performed flawlessly, with none of the previously noted “hiccups”. The mount and scope stayed rock solid, the stock continued to stand up to the punishment inflicted on it and theres only a slight feel of torgue in the pistol grip (this was traced back to the retaining pin we installed, as the hole it mates with is drilled in the wood, some of the wood had splintered allowing some lateral movement. I am in the process of widening the hole, and filling it with JB weld, which should provide a better receptacle).

Additionally the flashlight was tested for brightness and alignment, and was more than adequate to illuminate targets at 50 yards in total darkness (the flashlight, a surefire knockoff has also survived 200 rounds of abuse at this point, which is positive).

I think at this point we can call the project completed, and I can get back to working on the M14.

    Good times. I just remembered by insolent hard drive is still sitting in my living room.

    Set the “insolent” hard drive aside for the next range trip then. Personally I am hoping that the next trip will not involve some convoluted effort to deposit Jill with a set of grandparents (of course it will, but theres always hope!)

    Coconuts?!? Damn!! I should’a thought of that when a friend of mine who owns a chinese produce store asked me if I wanted a whole box of coconuts he was gonna throw out because they were past due.

    What was the effect like when the first round hit them?

    Hey Patrick,

    With the sterling assistance of Kyle from Zombie Squad a small video showing the “detonation” of a coconut is online here.

    I’ve posted pics and a quick summary over at the Zombie Squad forums here.

    We’re hoping for the next trip to get some better photos and/or video, especially as Uncle Ted has now demonstrated some proficiency in editing the video (so I don’t have to impose on Kyle). Teds been monkeying with the original clip like it was the Zapruder film.

    Discussed for the next trip were;

    - Lengthwise shot on a watermelon with 1 oz. slug and buckshot.
    - Coconuts vs. WWII firearms (SMLE and Garand).
    - Coconuts vs. shotguns (both for patterning and effectiveness at various ranges).

    We’ll see how that works out….

    Kooool! Can’t wait to see the results. Don’t forget to include the pistolas into the mix! I’d like to see what your Sig does to a coconut at 7 yards.
